The 1950 World Series, by contrast to the 2001 World Series, demonstrates how our perspective was foreshortened by television. Watching this series, you’d think the pitcher was standing only 20 feet from the plate. Vic Raschi, the “Springfield Rifle,” takes the mound, and it looks like he is standing within the batter’s reach; one day, he’d give up the first of Hank Aaron’s 755 home runs.
A great series. The kind of series you’d want to see any year. Mantle. Robinson. Berra. Snider. Hodges. Reese. Called by the great Red Barber and Mel Allen. The earliest games I remember looked like this, with Curt Gowdi calling the games.
